Breakfast, is it for you or not?

Breakfast…do you eat it or not? I know it’s a struggle just to wake up and get everyone out the door in the morning, so breakfast is often overlooked.

For my family, I know for a fact that we don’t do well if we are hungry. So as soon as the kiddos are up, they stagger into the kitchen, still half asleep, and eat their breakfast. I usually try to make sure they get a few carbs, some protein, and either a veggie or fruit to start their day. This ensures they have the energy they need to tackle their morning.

For me, eating a healthy breakfast helps to clear my head and gives me some thinking power. It wakes me up and energizes me for the day ahead. I often drink a smoothie packed with fruits, veggies, and protein. Another favorite of mine is a yogurt parfait (see the recipe below).

However, even though this is what works for us, it may not be for everyone. For instance, some people are just not hungry in the morning, or they may be following an intermittent fasting diet, in which case they may need to wait a bit before eating. As with most things, it really depends on the person. There is no clear right or wrong answer here, you do what’s best for you!

Mixed Berry Yogurt Parfait

  • Place a small layer of Greek Yogurt (low sugar) on the bottom or a small glass.
  • Layer on a few berries such as strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries (cut them into bite-sized pieces).
  • Add some granola, either store-bought or you can make your own.
  • Next, I add a little more yogurt and top it with fresh berries.

I love the creamy texture, and the crunch from the granola plus the sweetness from the berries wakes up my mouth. Pro-tip, putting it in a pretty glass just adds the extra touch of class to help set the right mood in the morning, and the extra protein from the Greek yogurt will help keep you full!
